Our Widelski and Clare ancestors left their European homes in the second half of the 19th century, and settled primarily in New York and the Chicago area. They overcame language barriers, crowded housing conditions, strenuous jobs, and untimely death of loved ones to establish themselves and thrive. Highlights from our ancestors’ stories include heroic policemen, firemen, a theft, young caretakers, an Olympian, bakers, and entrepreneurs.
We’re sharing these stories to preserve and cherish them. They will not be lost. We’re also hoping family members will contribute to them, add their own stories, and possibly help resolve some outstanding mysteries. What happened to Josephine Kauders Kriz? Where is Frank Kriz buried? Does Thomas Clare II have a twin? What town do our ancestors come from in Bohemia? There is more work to be done!
Please explore each ancestor’s story using the menu above.
Of note, there is a long line of Thomas Clares in the family. For clarity, we’ll use the following delineations:
- Our 2nd-great grandfather Thomas Clare (born circa 1875): Thomas Clare I
- Our great-grandfather Thomas Clare (born 1896): Thomas Clare II
- Our grandfather Thomas Clare (born 1920): Thomas Clare III
- Our father Thomas Clare (born 1944): Thomas Clare IV
